We formed as a regular public arts anchor school in 2005. Since then, we have created a positive and supportive school culture. Our students receive dance and art every week. The students also live in one of the most dangerous neighborhoods in Oakland. We have had three lock downs so far this school year. Teachers are currently working on improving students' level of academic discourse, especially in science. Because the kids are subject to a lot of stressors in their environment, I also spend a good amount of time addressing their emotional needs, through class meetings and one-on-ones. Our class recently visited a farm to see the overwintering site of the monarch. I was impressed with all the knowledge they had retained from their investigations of the insect life cycle in the classroom. They are budding scientists!
