My 7th grade reading students are all identified Special Education and vary in their ability to read. Some of the students read on a first to second grade level and others are as high as sixth grade level. Most of these students are reluctant to read because the materials they have are not appropriate for them and they have little to no confidence in themselves. I work in a public school that has struggled with creating appropriate opportunities for such students, however in my classroom expectations are high and students are trying to improve in their ability and meet my challenge. The school district that I teach in has many students that qualify for free and reduced lunch and have families that are not able to provide meaningful educational materials at home, and my students are no exception to this.
