My project will provide needed technology and opportunities for the children in our school. This project can help them discover that science and math is everywhere around them. My students need a laptop computer to assist them with this "Energized Learners Explore Their World" project. I want my students to be able to learn about science through hands-on experiences. The students will connect home and school experiences to complete this project. I want my students to have these experiences and love learning. I will use sustainable energy themed units within our library media classes. I teach an eager group of students! However, our school is located in a low income area with 100 percent of the students receiving free or reduced lunch. Lack of funds can sometimes hinder learning for students. Many of our students come from single parent families, live with extended family, or live in households where only one parent is working. Electricity is an integral part of our daily lives, but many energy sources are damaging the environment. I plan to have my students read about innovations in alternative energy sources, they will work in groups to design and build a model of a system to generate energy. Each group will then present their design/idea in class. Next, the students will monitor and record data on energy used at home and ways to conserve energy. The instructional activities will culminate with everyone discussing the importance of renewable energy resources and sharing what they did at home with their family to conserve energy. In order to carry out this unit my students need a computer to research various energy sources, design ideas, and plans for conserving electricity and saving money.
