The public middle school where I work is located in the middle of a growing city in the Southwest, less than an hour away from the Mexico border. Our school is one of the oldest schools located in the city. I have a great bunch of students with diverse personalities. They come to me with a range of math abilities. The majority of the students have a fixed mindset when it comes to math, believing if they are not good at math then they're just not a math person. My goal is to change that fixed mindset and turn it into a growth mindset. My class sizes range from 25 to 35 students. Demographics in my classroom are majority Hispanic students with some Anglo students. The social economic backgrounds of my students range from very low working class and middle class families. The school has a successful magnet program for science, and film and broadcast. The magnet programs bring in students from all over the district. The magnet programs have helped the school change the culture positively.
