An art class is a place where a student can explore new tools and media, positively express themselves, and explore their creativity. While we do practice the basics of drawing, painting, the elements of art, and the principles of design. My hope for my students is they learn to overcome fear. I think art is a way to face fear of failure, fear of honest expression, and fear of judgement. Through that struggle kids may even think about their world, including their own culture in a slightly different way than before they walked into my art class. Possibly, they may even enjoy that struggle a little bit.
