My students have extremely limited opportunities to experience hands-on learning. Even more rare are their chances to use tools to create something they have designed through a rigorous design process. The materials and tools in this project will augment the digital tools that we have available and will continue to lay the groundwork for my students to have access to a true makerspace in the school building.
Being able to create a self-designed product is an important and freeing skill. My students are very diverse and attend a Title 1 school in a city ranked 50 out of 50 for upward economic mobility. Other schools in the immediate area provide well-funded and well-stocked spaces for students to create their own designs. My students deserve the same chances that other students in wealthier schools do.
I have seen the creativity and the passion that my students have, and I cannot wait to see what they can do with more maker resources available to them. The Pegboard will become the basis for a new storage system in the classroom and will also allow the students to create their own storage solutions using 3D printers and other materials in conjunction with the Pegboard hooks and organizers. The cutting tools in this project will allow my students to shape more durable materials to their designs, especially a stash of plyboard that we have at the school. Prototyping is important, and all of the cardboard cutting tools will be in constant use as students begin to flesh out their ideas from paper into physical objects.
