My second graders are in Spanish Dual Immersion! I have two classes of 30 second graders. They are with me for half of the day and their English literacy teacher the other half. This is the seventh year that our school has housed the Dual Immersion program. At this time of the year, my students are beginning to speak, read, and write in Spanish-a language that is not spoken in their homes. The first months are difficult, as they are not only transitioning into first grade, but also learning from a teacher who speaks only in Spanish. My students learn the content areas of Math, Literacy, Social Studies and Science while simultaneously learning Spanish. The learning environment is fast paced and engaging, as I do my best to make my instruction comprehensible.
