Greetings and many thanks for visiting my page. I'm a Special Education English teacher charged with developing language arts skills of high school freshman and sophomores. By the time they walk into my room, many of my students have experienced extreme discouragement with language based school activities. As a result of their personal histories, they are experienced avoiders of reading and writing with a staggering array of strategies geared toward achieving that end. Once I am able to demonstrate books other than Facebook exist and that these artifacts may indeed provide enjoyable moments, perhaps even blissful ones, I am able to access their natural intellectual curiosity. Shakespeare is great for this, but so often the language is an initial barrier that is difficult to climb over. Graphic novels like Macbeth, Romeo and Juliet, and Hamlet support access to the big ideas that my students connect with. Thanks.
