I have chosen to incorporate flexible seating in my classroom for many reasons. One of the main reasons was for the students to have freedom to move. Flexible seating allows students to rock, wobble, bounce, and lean. This increases oxygen to the brain, blood flow, and core strength. It helps keep their minds more alert and to focused in class. Where ever they choose to sit, it has to be where their best learning takes place. Students should feel comfortable in their classroom. They spend 10 months in school and require seating that can accommodate their needs. Seating that encourages them to stay calm, focused, and productive. Flexible seating also helps create classroom community and collaboration. It encourages students to take turns and also pair up or move around the room easily. I believe our students learning environment can have a direct impact on their learning. I would love to provide student centered flexible seating into our classroom community to create a positive learning environment. The yoga balls will allow students the freedom to bounce and move while they work at a table or desk. The small round inflated seats will allow students to do the same thing, but at a lowered table. The stools will provide students with a seat that allows them to move with ease. The lawn chairs, tables, and lap desks will be used around the room for reading, small group, or computer time. The wonderful thing about flexible seating is that they have so many uses and are extremely versatile.
