Cuisenaire Rods are thoughtfully designed math manipulatives that help students build number sense. The rods come in 10 color-related sizes -- whole units from 1cm to 10cm. (1cm, 2cm, 3cm, etc.). The classroom set of Cuisenaire Rods includes enough pieces for several children to work together or independently. Research has shown us that children who are able to visualize numbers and the relationships between them will develop stronger mathematical sense. Using the rods, children can manipulate and visualize the relationships between the rods and the numbers they represent. Students can compare the rods, build the same length using various combinations of rods, as well as create and solve number sentences. By working with the consistent colors of the rods, students first learn basic relationships between them -- for example: "1 red and 1 white is the same length as 1 green". Eventually, children understand the number values of the rods, and can then take their understanding to the next level: "red equals 2, and white equals 1. Green equals 3, so 2 + 1 = 3. Cuisenaire Rods provide a multisensory opportunity for kids to explore numbers -- by seeing the colors, manipulating the rods, and discussing their discoveries with their peers. All of these opportunities help children develop a strong number sense which will support their mathematical learning for years to come!
