When an English learner enters a new school, he or she is emerged in an environment that is entirely unfamiliar. Sure, there are warm faces and kind friends and eager teachers, but the ESOL student can get overwhelmed and isolated in this overstimulating setting. Technology helps to calm and familiarize the overwhelmed English learner. As an ESOL teacher, I can customize lessons and guide students to appropriate apps and sites on an iPad and I suddenly see interest, motivation, and connection. The lessons can be individualized to go at their pace, which helps tremendously when their classmates are at completely different academic levels.
