My collection of 150+ lively, vibrant, fascinating youths are only too aware of Stockton's negative press. Just recently moved from number one to the fifth most dangerous city in America, Stockton is also ranked as the least literate city in the US with a population of over 250,000. When asked to list their favorite thing about Stockton, only a tiny fraction found anything positive to say. Yet, they are fiercely supportive of their family and the rich mixture of cultures in our student body (primarily Latino, Asian and African American). Many have developed their talent in art despite limited exposure outside their neighborhood to Stockton's exceptional cultural venues. Watching my students respond creatively through visual art is both touching and satisfying.
