This wriggly group of characters is excited about science and the environment, rich vocabulary and cursive handwriting. As first graders, they love a good read-aloud with rich illustrations and are able to grasp figurative language. Their writing demonstrates expression and creativity and they love to illustrate both stories and science. As a physically energetic bunch, they often need support sitting on the carpet, whether for math talks or think-pair-share activities with their partners. They love to bring their whiteboards and science notebooks to the carpet. With a group of 24, it is a tight fit for everyone to have a space for themselves and their materials. Currently we have a very old floral carpet with no delineated spaces. We are dreaming of carpet with sit spots so that everyone can know where their personal boundaries are in a visible way. This should enhance both our sense of community and our focus.
