My students are hungry learners. They devour real-world experiences and thrive with learning opportunities that transcend language abilities. They come to school ready to learn, despite home situations you or I can barely imagine. For many school is their only safe haven. Many live in situations where housing and food sources are insecure, a family member has been impacted by drugs or alcohol, and/or one parent may be incarcerated or living in another country. Most of my students would be considered "in need." They depend on our school to fulfill many of their basic AND educational needs. We are a Title I school, with 90% of our students receiving free or reduced lunch. Forty-five percent of students in my school are English Language Learners (ELLs). Despite all the challenges they face, my students are willing learners. They are hard-working, eager, and always willing to give whatever it takes.
