While using story books to introduce new concepts over the last nine weeks, I have found that the students are able to make math connections to the story, as well as apply that understanding to their work. I would like to continue to use stories to excite, engage, and enhance my students understanding of mathematical concepts. When we began our division unit we read a book called A remainder of one. Students were able to recall Remainder of one Joe, and how he had to keep adding lines to the 25th squadrons march in order to make the lines even for the queen. When learning the standard algorithm for division, students were able to make connections between the division process and Joe's story. My students are very eager to learn, and do well with non traditional teaching methods. My goal this year is to find new and exciting ways to teach Math concepts, while offering my students a full hands on learning experience
