My 3rd and 4th graders are learning to crochet their own scarves, pouches and doll blankets, and learning to sew their own rag dolls by cutting patterns and sewing pieces together. Sewing is not something that most children learn at a young age, and yet it is an important life skill. The pride on my students' faces when they have created their own cloth dolls is beyond rewarding. Through this process they are learning different types of stitches, to sew buttons, make clothes and embroider. Because they are so excited about their work, they are more motivated to face challenges and problem solve (How can I make shoes for my doll?). When I tell my students that we are going to learn how to crochet, some are excited but some have a look of panic on their faces. When they begin to actually crochet, they are filled with tremendous self confidence and self esteem. They begin to believe that they can achieve anything.
