My students live in Orange County and have access to many distractions that are way more interesting than what they find in their social studies textbooks. Facebook, Youtube (although I have found some amazing resources here), Skype, and texting their friends are all things that can tempt them from their studies. Since my school is not a Title I funded school, there are very little discretionary funds for classroom materials that are more engaging than the (yawn) textbook. The abilities of the students in my classes range from GATE to learning challenged. Regardless of their academic needs, my students are wonderful young adults. My seventh graders are eager to try new things and see the world in new ways. I am desperate to acquire materials that can challenge them all, at the level they are at, while at the same time engaging them.
