My students live in a low-income community in Georgia and many of them have learning disabilities. Sixth grade is a critical time for students. This is the first time that they will experience an increased level of independence in school and will have to balance the demands of various classes. I want to set my students on a path towards success from the very first day of school. My school is considered a Title 1 School, with over 95% of students receiving free or reduced lunch. This means that many of my students' families face economic obstacles, so asking for students to come to class with a binder, notebook, paper, dividers, folder, and pencil is a lot to ask for. I want to provide each child with a "Math Passport to Success" Portfolio as a way to welcome them to middle school and to set the expectation for success early in their academic careers.
