I've taught early childhood for 10 years. Every year I tell myself, "wouldn't it be awesome if I had a class set of....". It's usually something simple, something basic, but something really hands-on and valuable to new learners. My class writes every day. We practice letter formations at the front of the room, while sitting on the carpet. They really love using the few mini white boards that I have, but how awesome would it be if we could ALL do this together at the same time? I will model the letters on the board and the kids will write theirs. I can check their progress right away. We will also use the boards/markers during Math. During the year we play many games on the carpet. The kids can write their answers to the problems and hold them up for me to see. This makes learning fun and inclusive to all the learners at the same time. I love to get creative with stations in my class. We often "write on the table" for sentence making. The white board markers will be great for this. Adding a little fun and something outside the box can often be the little edge that will get a reluctant worker on board. Worksheets are boring! I plan to use the play-doh in a variety of ways. We will make letters, words, numbers and model addition and subtraction problems. With the stampers, the kids will be able to use make a picture model quickly for word problems. They will also use them to go on letter hunts and mark what they find. With the letter stamps, the kids will all have a full set during station rotations. They will use them for making their sight words, letter recognition, letter matching and sounds with pictures.
