Historical Literacy is a social justice issue. Research has shown that engaging and memorable graphic stories support literacy. Abina and the Important Men is a graphic narrative of one Ghanaian woman's struggle against slavery. The volume includes a reading guide, court transcripts, and support in understanding historical methodology as well as big themes in world history. I believe my young historians deserve to have access to historical narratives that will help them see themselves as historians and learn the value of diverse historical perspectives. Abina and the Important Men; A Graphic Story, by Trevor R. Getz and Liz Clarke suits this aim perfectly. Classrooms sets of this text, one that is beautifully illustrated and provides a chance to do a deep qualitative dive into a single historic event are rare in diverse, inner city public schools such as ares, but this is where such sets are most needed.
