As part of an extremely rural farming community, many of my students rarely find time to read. Most of my boys are busy helping their parents learn the intricacies of agriculture or learning to hunt, fish, and roam the great outdoors. While these activities are useful and important, it is my job as their English teacher to tap into their interests and entice them with books and interesting texts. Most of my students informed me that they only read when bored if they read at all. As sixth graders, students with this view are setting themselves up for failure. When I took stock of their interests and what they were excited about, I found that they wanted to read real-life stories about survival or adventure the most. Our school library, unfortunately, was a bit lacking in that arena. I felt at a loss, but was undaunted.
