The bass clarinet that I have requested is a "must have" for the success of our band program. Our school does not currently own one, and that limits both the performance opportunities we can offer our students, as well as their ability to fully understand and appreciate important musical concepts like balance, blend and timbre. If we had a bass clarinet, not only would our students be able to perform concert band literature as the composers intend, we would also be able to introduce them to other performance opportunities. We could teach the students to perform in a variety of chamber ensembles, like duets, trios, quartets, etc., as well as bass clarinet solo literature. Finally, having a bass clarinet would allow students in our program additional opportunities to participate in honor bands like all-district and all-state.
