My 6th grade art students are entering a challenging time in their education. They are transitioning from elementary to middle school and are coming face to face with more responsibility. They come to art expecting to make projects that are teacher centered and find that they are expected to not only learn about great masters and time periods in art, but they will be challenged with coming up with original ideas and exploring the concept of taking chances. Middle school students are searching for their identity and need a safe place to explore who they are becoming. Art class is an opportunity to allow individuality steeped with creativity. Sketchbooks can help them with the responsibility of self-assessment; sketchbooks become a living document of their 6th grade year with the capability for reflection that could not be possible without them.
