Many of my students have never had art class before and I see my students every day over the whole school year so we make a lot of art. The majority of the 80 students I work with, who are 6th, 7th, and 8th graders, come from broken families who live in poverty. They are a mix of cultures, African American, White, Hispanic, and Vietnamese, and have a wide range of learning styles and learning challenges. My school is public and is located in a rural suburb. Although a major city is only 15 minutes away, many of my students rarely leave their neighborhoods. Generally, my students rely on social media and television for their main source of entertainment and information about the world. On a positive note, my students constantly surprise me during my lessons with their capacity and thirst for learning new things in art class. Often, in the middle of one assignment, I get asked eagerly, "What are we doing next!?"
