Hi everyone! I'm a fourth grade teacher at a title 1 school in Jamaica, Queens. Despite the sass I get from my students and the never ending work that needs to get done every day, I am passionate about my profession. I wasn't that student who aced every test nor enjoyed school. I know. Ironically, I'm a teacher. However, I find education to be important and believe it creates a path for many opportunities and that's what my students deserve. I decided to create this project because I was one of those students who didn't love reading and honestly, I still do not LOVE reading. It takes me a while to choose a good book that I enjoy. As a teacher who has the power of gifting a different experience for my students, I want to create a classroom library that will give them the opportunity to be exposed to NEW books. Whether it is through a read-aloud or independent reading, I want students to grab a book that interests them. A book that they can relate to. A book that will give them the power to imagine and read with a purpose. I don't have many students who purchase books through Scholastic book orders. They don't have someone at home on a regular basis to take them to the public library. The most exposure they get is the classroom library. Although I was never a book lover, I loved and still love purchasing new books. There are Kindles and all sorts of e-books out there these days. However, I truly believe there is something special about grabbing a book in hand. I want my students to experience that special feeling as well.
