We are very excited about being able to expand the opportunities for students to follow (or discover new) passions outside of the classroom setting. PLAID kits can be checked out on Thursdays for independent or at-home-collaborative work over a one or two week period. Each of these kits would be decontaminated and restocked before being checked out to another family. One example: The owl kit could include a book to identify the different owls in our ecosystem, a digital component with links to remote viewing cameras, and an owl pellet to dissect with a guide, tools, and journal to record observations. The picture book Owl Moon, by Jane Yolen, would remind students of an in-person lesson highlighting the use of sensory imagery in an illustrated text and might inspire a family to go on their own nighttime walk.
