For a unit on non-fiction, I am asking students to consider how the lived experiences of others help us to better understand complex issues in the world. I would like to gather together multiple copies of high-interest non-fiction that introduces students to worlds outside of their own, the layered lives of others, as well as issues that need our attention. Through reading, we can gain insight and grow empathy. My students will read these texts in small groups. We will use these titles to help us learn about the impact of circumstances; the value of diverse voices; and the history that creates our current world today. Simultaneously each group will produce a podcast to share their learning with one another.
