My students live in an extremely low income area of Texas. We have a beautiful new building and loads of technology but the budget to supply classroom sets of novels is just not available. I have spent a lot of my personal money building up my classroom library to subsidize the school's library collection. Being a new school there is only one copy of each book in the library, which can be a problem with popular titles. Since almost all of my students are at-risk and limited English proficient, the books that we read as a class need to be short and interesting. They have short attention spans and tough home lives so titles like The First Part Last are helpful to them. Most of them are products of teenage pregnancies and live with just one parent so they can relate to the main character.
