It’s important for my students to have a sense of ownership. Cubbies will allow them to do that, because they will have a place to put their personal belongings. My students know that they are responsible for checking in/putting their things away every morning. We got moved into a different room this year, and we don’t have cubbies or a place for their book bags/personal belongings. My students take pride in checking in when they arrive at school. This is also where each student stores his/her snack, and we want to continue to encourage independence at all meal times. This will help us promote their independence within the classroom by letting them be in charge of their book bags and snack.
