At the end of the last school year, I decided that I needed to do more to bring history to life in my classroom. I teach geography, government, and history, and my classroom is typical: cinder block walls painted in school colors and a chalkboard. I've purchased and hung a few maps but my room is lacking in historical images. Last spring I purchased 6 posters from the Gilder Lehrman Institute of American History. The posters include iconic photographs of Abraham Lincoln, Frederick Douglass, and Theodore Roosevelt as well as a reproduction of the Declaration of Independence. I would like to frame and hang each of these posters so that my students will be able to SEE that history is about real people and events and not just a bunch of words on paper (although sometimes it is a bunch of important words on paper!).
