We have started a honey bee hive here at school to help students learn and appreciate the work that bees do in the world. We will start off with classroom activities and will take groups out to see the bees in action in the hive. Most student see honey bees and wasps and hornets as all the same - they sting you. We want to show them that we can live in harmony with this great pollinator as long as we treat them with care and understand their behaviors. But we have a ways to go so we need bee jackets for students that are not comfortable being around bees until they see that honey bees are docile and in most cases will not sting them unless aggravated. Students need to understand that without bees a lot of the food they eat will disappear and that we have create places were bees can survive which means eliminating pesticides that destroy bees and hives for a good looking lawn.
