Our students love to read, but those who are in our mentorship program for African American girls want to read books that represent who they are as a person. Many students come from low-income communities and have not read many books by black authors or books with black main characters. Some of our students are struggling to be themselves in spaces where they don't have many people who look like them. I believe this will help them with their self-esteem and encourage them to become readers. By having these gooks, students will have diverse reading option and and will be more incline to read.
