Every minute of the school day is an opportunity to learn new material and practice previously learned skills. Independent practice in centers can be a struggle for many students if they are unsure if they are correctly answering questions or mastering the concepts given to them to practice. When I am meeting with my small groups, I want to assure that the activities I give my students are rigorous, worthwhile, and engaging. My students LOVE the power pens! I purchased one of the pens and a set of cards to see how they would respond to it and it is always the first choice during rotations in reading. I actually had to assign numbers as to who would get it on which day. The best part is I believe it is also doing a wonderful job of reinforcing the learning taking place in the classroom. I would love to have a whole set of these pens and the cards so that all my students would be able to benefit from what I believe to be an invaluable tool to their independent practice.
