At my school, the yearlong theme for 10th-grade English is culture. A novel unit takes place about halfway through the year. Instead of using the novels we have read in the past, I would like to have my students read the book "Purple Hibiscus" by Chimamanda Ngozi Adichie. This book tells the story of how a young Nigerian girl with an abusive father is transformed by a stay at her free-thinking aunt's house. The book is great because it takes place in relatively modern times, making it much more relatable than other novels focused on culture.
Having a class set of this book will be a great help, as most of the students in this class cannot afford their own copies of books. In addition to reading the book, my students will complete informative posters as part of their research on Nigerian culture - which means they need art supplies! The Nigerian cookbook will assist them in preparing traditional Nigerian dishes to give them even more context for the novel. A book on Nigeria's history provides an additional resource for their research, and a Nigerian flag in the classroom will create additional excitement and enthusiasm as we progress through the book. The headphones will allow my students with dyslexia and other learning disabilities to listen to audio versions of "Purple Hibiscus."
Finally, I'm hoping for some basic supplies to assist the students in their everyday work on this unit: pencils for writing and clipboards to hold their papers as they work in groups.
