Childhood obesity – on the rise: In the United States, 17% or approximately 12 million children are considered obese. The CDC states that healthy eating and physical activity lowers risk of developing chronic diseases such as diabetes. Children are specifically influenced by many sectors of society, including families, communities, and schools. Schools play an important role in supporting children’s health. As a community, to reverse the obesity epidemic in children, efforts should be focused on supporting active living as well as healthy eating. I want to establish healthy eating habits to help support student health and provide students with a feeling of accomplishment. Creating healthier school environments can be challenging, but with your help I can encourage students to be more health conscious by promoting mindful eating. This will encourage students to think before they eat. The provided snacks will help demonstrate what portion control looks like, a lower calorie consumption, and offer less sugar. Items will also be compared and contrasted. For example, comparing the nutritional value of Frito Lay Baked Chips to regular Frito Lay Potato Chips, Sunchips, Popchips, and Skinny pop popcorn, etc. We will also compare the nutritional value of the different variety of cookies to the Clif Energy Bars and Nutri-Grain Bars to help students see first hand the best snack choices to consider. Students will learn about Natural Spring Water and how it is a better choice over sugary soda and juice, since it is more alkaline and less acidic. The utility cart will be used to display and deliver the healthy snacks. Youth oftentimes eat without paying attention to the nutritional value. However, mindful eating is an important component of maintaining health. As a positive incentive, please help me help our students improve their nutrition and make the healthy choice the easy choice.
