As a new teacher, I have a limited collection of books to share with my students. These books specifically will be used as read alouds for meeting times in my classroom to facilitate discussions and give children the opportunity to learn about acceptance, empathy, compassion, and most importantly, that being different is good. Reading diverse books promotes community, unity and inclusion within the classroom and beyond. These lessons often spill over and lead to conversations with families, allowing additional learning opportunities for students and families. Children are curious and full of questions, books like these can be helpful in addressing certain uncomfortable situations with children as well.
