I teach between 170-190 7th and 8th grade students each year. As a Language Arts teacher, there is a focus on critical thinking, creativity, communication, and collaboration. My class room has quick direct instruction followed by independent, partner, and small group work supported by myself and often a teacher candidate from the local university our school is in a PDS with. My room could look and sound like organized chaos; however, it is always filled with learning, questioning, and problem solving using multiple resources. Often, I am the last resource used! (YES!) Along with one of my colleagues, I follow the idea of being the Guide on the Side rather than the Sage on the Stage helping students foster their own independent learning and solving problem skills. They often learn there is more than one way to solve a problem, and the answer rarely resides at the back of the book.
