To say my students come from deprived households is a bit too easy. These students often deal with issues that no child should have to deal with- issues like hunger and basic safety. Their community is universally impoverished, their parents committing all their energy just trying to scrape by. The children get no culture, no enrichment in their lives. It is mostly a bleak, urban experience, in which they do nothing but stay at home for fear that pervasive violence may do them in. School is the one bright spot in their lives. We try to create a place for them where they can feel safe and where they can develop the gifts that will help them break out of the cycle of poverty and hopelessness that many in the community feel. They are almost entirely Hispanic and need to be exposed to many different cultures so they can better understand the world they will be entering as adults.
