I teach beyond tolerance. I encourage my students to learn as much as possible about everything they can. Books allow us to dive into worlds unknown, they open doors to countries we will never visit, and they teach us that there is more to than just outside our windows. Who we are as individuals is part of who we have become as educators. We have consciously or subconsciously weaved our biases and experiences into the classroom. As we reflect on our practices, we need to identify who we are, and how our core values impact our students. "If we don’t give children books that are literary mirrors as well as windows to the whole world of possibility, if these books don’t give them the opportunity to see outside themselves, then how can we expect them to grow into adults who connect in meaningful ways to a global community, to people who might look or live differently than they. You cannot." -Kwame Alexander
