Weather is one of our first curiosities. From a young age, we've all wondered why the sky was blue, what clouds were, why storms appear, or why the seasons change. We question how it can change so quickly and how we can predict what the weather may be in the future. It impacts our lives daily, yet understanding the abstract concepts associated with this science can be challenging for students of any age. Making the connection between the weather maps and symbols we see on our TV's, newspapers, and computer screens and the weather we can expect to have requires an understanding of the ever-changing, yet somewhat predictable, nature of our atmosphere. The materials that I am requesting for my school are specifically tailored to increase student's understanding of weather patterns across the United States and their ability to interpret weather symbols. Donating to this project will bring quality materials into the classroom that are designed to engage students in hands-on, collaborative activities on the topic of weather forecasting. The reusable materials provided in this product and the colorful classroom posters will greatly aid in increasing our students' proficiency in this area. Students will work in small groups to interpret weather maps for two consecutive days and prepare a weather report for each day to share with their classmates. Prior to sharing, they will collaborate with students that were assigned the same dates and be given time to adjust their reports per peer review. Students will be required to answer higher-order questions and complete illustrations throughout the process on the provided activity sheets. Once all students have shared their reports for the eight consecutive days, they will then individually prepare weather forecasts for a ninth day in the form of a weather map and presentation of their choosing.
