In my school our 8th grade students have traditionally had a hard time understanding convection. I have personally purchased convection tubes to show students convection in action but it only works for a minute or two and requires a candle to operate. Once the dye makes one pass around the tube it has to be cleaned and reset. If our school had a few large lava lamps students would be able to see convection in action and I could reference it often after the actual lava lamp work was completed. These lamps also reduce fire risks and teach the lesson in an easier to understand way. By keeping it around them and asking students to describe the convection, they will be able to remember it for the rest of their lives.
