Every single one of my students come from African-American or Latino backgrounds. Fortunately, they are growing up in a time where TV has gotten a lot more diverse and they can now see people who look like them on screens. However, nothing can replicate the feeling of sitting on the mat during read-aloud and hearing stories about how someone who looks just like them accomplished something incredible. It is imperative that my students learn about who they are, so when they get older they can be agents of change and really create the world they want to live in. This library will be the primary focus of our diverse little classroom, and my goal is to make reading to my students their favorite part of the day. All of the books I've chosen detail stories of perseverance, triumph, and pride; three qualities I strive hard to instill in my students.
