My students are the most vocal and creative students on the planet, yet, their underexposure to life outside of their communities stifle their voices and motivation. The bad news is that 79% of them are performing below their grade level according to achievement test data. The good news is that 50% of that group are just points away from being proficient readers. Many of my students are children of Hispanic immigrants and are reconciling their home language with English. A majority of my students receive free or reduced lunch and live in single-family households. Many of them have also lost loved ones or friends to violence. And in spite of these challenges, they show up to school every day. Technology is plentiful in our labs but competition with computer-based testing puts using them at a premium. Help us in our quest to beat the odds and win.
