I teach at a highly diverse high school in a community that has the designation of having one of the highest rates of poverty for a city its size in the country because I believe in closing the education gap for students that are lacking opportunities. AP Environmental Science will be the first rigorous college level science class that many of my students will take. Not only will they need academic scaffolding that I will provide to reach the level of proficiency that is necessary for them to be successful in AP level classes and to be competitive for college admissions, but my students will need experience with college level science equipment and materials to help level the playing field when they enter college. My students are capable and actively engage when the learning opportunities are relevant and hands on. As my students gain experience and confidence with methodology and equipment, I believe they will be interested and encouraged to pursue scientific career paths.
