This project request follows the philosophy that supporting a hesitant reader will promote much success in the areas of literacy, reading & writing skills, and understanding the surrounding society. Currently the majority of students have said that they only read books when assigned and chosen by a teacher; even then most acknowledged NOT reading outside of the classroom. By allowing for increased student options (following Kelly Gallagher & Kylene Beers' approach to literacy) students are allowed to explore interests, passions, and (in many cases) living writers that they can reach out to and perhaps even meet. Student choice in readings will be shared through book clubs, blogs, and flipgrid shares enabling students to share their experiences and emulate the styles and approaches taken by selected writers.
