I teach 2nd grade for an urban low income public school in Illinois with a population of about 800, grades Pre-8th. This year funding was significantly cut and supplies and resources are scarce. I pay out of pocket for most supplies in my class. I have 33 students in my room (most classrooms exceed 30 students) and the majority are English Language Learners, speaking Spanish as their primary language. My students are very well-behaved and hard workers. Often they are very quiet and shy, due to language barriers. Academically, most of my students are below grade level standards, with a few that are at grade level standards. Most students received reduced price or free lunch, as well as breakfast in the morning that is eaten in the classroom.
