I ask you to imagine an environment that’s designed for students to feel comfortable, where they can collaborate, take chances and be productive. Instead of rows of desks that confine student to a chair I would like to support my learners with flexibility. This helps them to adapt to their unique needs and preferences. Flexible seatings engages students and empowers them with the confidence to be proactive and make choices regarding diverse seating options. This year my school has taken its first steps in their coding adventures. Second grade is learning how to code mazes and build robots with Code To The Future. A flexible classroom gives my 22 vibrant and eager second graders room to do these epic builds and to hold presentations for their families inside the classroom. More room to create is more room to grow and learn, it’s a win win experience. Flexible seating is student-centered, and promotes collaborative learning. It fosters the building of a positive classroom community. With more areas within the classroom to gather to work, I can invite more parents into my classroom. Parents and families will have more space to interact with their child and other students in small groups, during art projects, science experiments and more. Bringing the families into the classroom for experiences like these help the students and their families to take ownership of their class and their education. Flexible seating is a best practice and more teachers are taking on this approach. I would like to use the grant money to begin this shift in my classroom and pilot flexible seating with my students!
