My 7th and 8th grade students attend a high need, public, middle school in Washington, DC. Over 90% of my students receive free or reduced lunch. They arrive in my classroom with a wide range of scientific knowledge and academic skills. Some students are two years above grade level, while others are behind by five, and each of my students has a unique cultural and personal background that influences their learning. It is my job to ensure each student masters the grade level Physical Science content and develop an understanding of the nature of Science as inquiry. However, Science is particularly challenging for many of my students. There is a lot of new vocabulary and abstract concepts to learn. Students struggle with putting the new material together, and often students feel content is not relevant to their lives.
