This year I have taken a new approach to setting up my 3rd Grade ELA and Social Studies classroom. With this new approach, I have had no input in the set up, or layout of our classroom. The students have had total and complete freedom and creativity in designing their " Dream Classroom". Before allowing the students to take over this project, I facilitated a classroom discussion in which the students came up with a "slogan" of how the atmosphere in their dream classroom would create the best space possible for learning, making mistakes, and for growing. This is what the students came up with: " When we walk into our dream classroom, we feel welcome and accepted, we feel comfortable and organized. In our classroom we have spaces to lay back and read, spaces to write, draw and create. Our dream classroom has a variety of different work-spaces that will allow us to make the most of our learning everyday. We will have whole-group learning and small- group learning spaces, independent work areas and buddy work stations, a special work space for students who are being recognized for their outstanding achievements in the classroom, and also a special nook for calming down when we are angry or sad." During the first week of school, students split up into design teams, created layouts, made blue prints and presented/agreed upon the design of each work-space in their "dream classroom". We are almost ready for action, but we need you're help. Unfortunately, the school, nor I, have a budget that will allow my students to make their dream a reality. With the help of your donation I plan to purchase the necessary furniture for each work space, and flexible seating options for each space in our classroom. All materials are STUDENT SELECTED!
