I teach high school English and an intervention course for students who have failed the state exams for the subject area. 20-25% of my students are in special education programs, and close to 50% of my English students and 100% if my intervention students are at risk of not graduating from high school. In class, we often talk about critical thinking skills and how they empower us in life. I tell them English class is not just about reading and writing, but about thinking and learning how to develop skills they will use both now and after high school. These students are funny, unique, and creative. All they need is a little challenge and some inspiration to help them take their skills to the next level.
